Cut Grade (The most important of all the 4 C's)

Most gemmologists consider the proportions / cutting grade of a diamond to be its most important characteristic. Because the cut determines how light is reflected within the diamond and how brilliant and beautiful it will be. In other words, a diamond with a poor cut will appear dull and lifeless, even if it has perfect colour and clarity.

Cut Grade Descriptions

Excellent

A symmetrically superior diamond. Representative of the top 2% of diamond cutting quality. Appears larger and will Reflects all light that enters the diamond.

Very Good

An exquisite quality diamond. Representative of the top 10% of diamond cutting quality. Reflects nearly all light that enters the diamond.

Good

A reasonable quality diamond. Represents roughly the top 25% of diamond cutting quality. Still reflects a modest amount of light and is fare less expensive.

Fair

Considered an average quality cut diamond. Represents roughly the top 40% of diamond cutting quality. A fair cut will not be as bright and brilliant as a good cut .

Poor

All diamonds below the standards of a fair cut. Are considered poor, This cut is deep and narrow or shallow and wide, resulting in a dull and lifeless appearance.

Colour Grade

When it comes to a diamond's colour, many people think all diamonds are brilliantly white - but this is seldom the case. Nature has provided a whole spectrum of colours in the makeup of a diamond, from flawless white to much cheaper yellow or brown. Acting as a prism, a diamond divides light into a spectrum of colours and reflects this light as colourful flashes called fire. The whiter a diamond is the more This results in a more beautiful looking diamond!

Clarity Grade

Clarity is an indication of a diamond's purity. In all diamonds, except the most rare, tiny traces of minerals, gasses, or other elements were trapped inside it during the crystallization process. These are called inclusions, these inclusions, as defined by the IGI are "characteristics", which are inside a stone or extend into it from the surface.

A diamond free of inclusions and blemishes is very rare, and thus more valuable.  Therefore, the cleaner the diamond, the more it will cost.

Carat weight

This is the size of the diamond measured in carats. One carat is divided into 100 "points" so that a diamond of 75 points weighs 0.75 carats. Carat weight is the most obvious factor in determining the value of a diamond. But two diamonds of equal carat weights can have very unequal prices, depending on their quality grades, larger diamonds are rarer and in more demand than smaller stones, so they can be sold for a higher price. A one carat diamond solitaire ring will always be more expensive than a diamond ring made up of smaller diamonds totalling one carat.

Certification

A diamond certification is an essential part of buying a diamond ; it provides an accurate guarantee of its quality. Purchasing a diamond with out one, will more than likely lead to you NOT getting what you've payed for! Please note, in-house valuation are "NOT" certifications and according to the ACCC only have to be with-in one colour and clarity grade of assessment. This leaves way for a jeweller to upgrade a diamond for more profit!

Diamond Fluorescence

The stronger the fluorescence the cheaper the diamond !

About 35% of all diamonds have fluorescence that can be seen under an ultraviolet light. About 10% of diamonds have enough fluorescence to make a noticeable difference in the diamond's colour when viewed under fluorescent light, In less than 5% of diamonds, the level of fluorescence is high enough to cause the diamond to appear foggy or milky in appearance. The following table illustrates the impact of fluorescence on the wholesale price of diamonds and how that can very for different colour combinations.
